Anna is new to Chic-a-ta, a small town in Texas. Imagine her surprise to find an African lion roaming loose as she rides her horse through the countryside. Meeting Samson, the lion, brings her into contact with the Chic-a-ta Zoo and the family who runs it.
Soon she and her new friends at the zoo are actively involved in caring for this unique group of animals, including Samson, Bertha the elephant, Spot the giraffe, Harry Houdini Chimp, and more.
Then the unthinkable happens. A wicked plot is carried out to bring about the zoo's condemnation and all its animals as they are let out of the cages and wind up trampling the local high school and scaring the town citizens.
The only way to save the beloved animals is to herd them to 'Freedom Ranch,' a wildlife refuge. But an angry councilman and his posse chase after them to destroy the animals.
Will Anna and her friends make it to the sanctuary, or will they have to watch the posse kill the zoo animals?
